CONTENTS / CONCEPT:
We call them 'Vikings', but who were they really? For many people today, the term 'Viking' is perceived as synonymous with piracy, robbery and violence. However, the ‘Vikings’ were probably not more brutal or merciless than others in mediaeval Europe. The Scandinavians of this era had identities as farmers, traders, sailors, men, women, warriors, children. Hidden elements of this complex Scandinavian mediaeval culture are brought to light, common misconceptions are debunked, and new and more nuanced conceptions are presented. The exhibition seeks not just to sustain, but also to reinforce our fascination with the ‘Vikings’.
The exhibition design reflects the diversity and complexity of this mediaeval Scandinavian culture. The seven themes of the exhibition are portrayed in expressive ways, and are connected by a band that contains written and archaeological evidence, shedding light on secrets surrounding the ‘Vikings’. The visitor gets to take an emotional and informative 'course' through the Viking age.
